Liza Palmer's review of the Journal of Short Film: Vol 1 included comments on Corner, Los Angeles:

A few films, in particular, resonate with the viewer. One of these is Corner, Los Angeles by Joe Merrell. It features a segmented frame, geometrically divided up like a chessboard. The images that populate these mini-frames are pieces of several fixed-camera shots of a single street corner, presumably taken at different points in the day. As a result, some of the boxes relate to the others, some do not. Merrell's film is a deceptively simple concept, commenting subtly on the single vantage point of the fixed camera - but one that is enhanced by multiple exposures. In many ways, Corner, Los Angeles is like an integrated filmic interpretation of painterly studies, like those of Rouen Cathedral by Monet.
